skateboarding for dummies (the basics)
Ok to start your going to need all of the right equipment so i'll write a little check list.
- a skateboard (all parts in working order)
- some comfy shoes (that may get scraches if your just starting out)
- somewhere to practise
- safety gear (most people choose to ignor this one but your going to realise why its there quick.)
Ok so once you've got all of the equipment together lets begin with what stance on the board you prefer.
start by placing the board on grass infront of you and then with out thinking jump on the board like shown at the end of this video stance video.
so now you know what stance you are now we can start moving. start in your prefered stance and normally the foot on the back of the board would be used for pushing (but use whatever foot feels comfortable i use my front foot) start off by pushing once or twice and get both feet on your board, just get used to the board moving, then try bigger and more powerful pushes
now let start turning the board, you can do this by one of two ways, the first way is depending on your stance is the way you'll turn but if your regular (left foot towards the front of the board),start by pushing down with your toe's and the board should start to go right, then to go left you push down with your heels (try and keep your knees bent and just pivot you feet) turning video
ok now that you've perfected moving and turning i think its time for your first trick. The Manual
since this it the first time you've tryed this i would recommend try this trick stationary on soft ground i.e. carpet or grass. also make sure you have enough room to fall (just incase) start by standing on the board in you preferred stance, then put enough pressure on your rear foot to make the noseof the board come up and try staying balanced for as long as possible, keep trying as this will increase tour balance which will help you with other tricks, once you feel ready to move find a piece of tarmac that is smooth and quiet, then push off gently and try to push down with your rear foot (this will feel different from standing still) once you can do it slowly try and do the trick faster and faster. Manual Video
now that you can manual it's time for the trick you've been waiting for The Ollie,
since this it the first time you've tryed this i would recommend try
this trick stationary on soft ground i.e. carpet or grass. also make
sure you have enough room to fall (just incase) start by standing on
the board in you preferred stance, with your rear foot on the tail of the board and your front foot just behind he screws for the truck, then push down hard with your rear foot when the front of the board comes up your going to slide your front foot up the board and forwards (which should bring the rear up) Dont worry if you dont do it first time or even the 10th time its all about timing you'll get it eventually (it took me about 2 days of solid practice) Ollie Video
once you feel comfortable with it on grass try moving to standing still but on concrete, you'll find that the board wants to move alot more.
once youve completed stationary lets try it moving, start just like the manual slow and steady. then get faster and higher, eventally try jumping over things like curbs and cans. remember moving does feel different than standing still,

Great information for someone looking to get into skateboarding. Definitely have to emphasize the need for safety equipment - especially for beginners.
great info. i do agree with most of it, though not all of it... of course, every skater is different, so let me just add this: make sure you do what is comfortable for you. if you dont ollie like the video described, then do it your way. just do it safely in your own style.
this is a good starter for beginners

There's some pretty good information in here. I'd just like to add that if you have NEVER skated before, you should take it easy. If you fall within your first couple of minutes of skating, there's a good chance you won't want to get back on the board.
